Phacilitate 2020

CellCAN attended Phacilitate Leaders World Summit 2020

CellCAN spent an exciting week in Miami for the 2020 Phacilitate Leaders World summit. We attended talks, toured the exhibit hall, and met with cell and gene therapy manufacturers. The Canadian landscape was well represented, with representatives from Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.

Since Phacilitate is run alongside the World Stem Cell Summit, we were treated to talks on the latest advances in the field, including treatments for liver disease, heart failure, and cancer. David Courtman was part of a Canada-heavy session, where he explained the science behind Northern Therapeutics and the promising results he’s seen using patient-derived stem cells to treat pulmonary hypertension. The same session also featured Massimiliano Paganelli, who spoke about Morphocell’s encapsulated liver tissue that allows patients’ own livers time to regenerate. Afterwards, we listened to a panel discussion featuring the Canadian landscape, especially the new Schedule G regulatory pathway that makes it easier for companies to test advanced therapies.

Other highlights included the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine Cell & Gene State of the Industry 2020, (which can be downloaded here: and a discussion on the difficulties surrounding the new Right to Try legislation. There were also some inspiring presentations on the patient experience, with a strong reminder about the importance of using the Informed Consent ISSCR Standard for Stem Cell-Based Interventions (important reading material for those starting clinical trials).

In the exhibit hall, we got our hands on some state-of-the-art manufacturing devices, including cooling systems, fill/finish instruments, and bioreactors. There were plenty of demos for those curious about the details of how the instruments work. For us, the highlight of the meeting was the opportunity to connect with others in the field from around the world. CCRM ran a fantastic MATCH program, where early-stage biotech companies connected with suppliers and mentors who have already been through some of the hurdles of commercialization. Be sure to check out Phacilitate next year when it moves to South Beach!
